Thoothukudi, September 16, 2015: Sterlite Copper, a unit of Vedanta Limited has initiated delisting and cleaning work in Maruthur Melakal Channel of Maruthur Reservoir and sub channels of Srivaikuntam North Main Channel viz. Arumugamangalam Channel, Perur Channel, Agaram Channel and Vellur Channel. The inauguration of the project was held at Maruthur Melakal Channel today.
A special pooja was performed and the desilting & cleaning work commenced in the presence of Mr D Dhanavel, Head – Commercial, Sterlite Copper, Mr D Udhayasuriyan, Chairman, Tamiraparani Project Committee and Mr Alangaram, Chairman, Maruthur Melakal Channel.
The desilting and cleaning work of Maruthur Melakal Channel started at Maruthur and will end at Vellur, covering a distance of 15 kms. As the water flow in the channel is slowed down due to excess weed growth, farmers are finding it difficult to get the required quantity of water for irrigation. In such scenario, the undertook project will allow free flow of water in the channel benefitting 50,000 farmers covering around 12,000 acres of agricultural land in and around Maruthur Melakal Channel and sub channels of Srivaikuntam North Main Channel. The cleaning work is expected to be completed within three weeks.
Mr M Esakkiappan, Head – Public Relations of Sterlite Copper, Members of Tamiraparani Project Committee & Maruthur Melakal Channel and Sterlite Copper Officials were present during the function.
